Private Server

Yesterday my website got a little upgrade, I was after a long wait transferred to Dreamhost PS, which is a dedicated virtual server just for me.
My site has not been under heavy traffic but still my gallery has been feeling slow sometimes. Not anymore, at least it seems to be faster.
Of course as downside I have to pay a little more for this server now, but at this time I really think that it is worth.
One of the nicest thing in Dreamhost PS is ability to change allocated resources in real-time. If I think or see that I need more memory to my server, I just login to panel and assign more and after a while it has been updated to my server. For example I tried to install and run GlassFish application server and it needed a lot more memory than I was originally allocated (and paying for). But with Dreamhost this was no problem, I just increased memory in control panel, waited for change to become active and then installed GlassFish and tested it. After testing I just went back to original memory setting and I only paid for few hours for more resources. This is exactly how things should work. Just pay for what you are using, not about what you might sometimes need to use.

Nokia N800

I have been getting ready for studying and one thing that I have been thinking about is my laptop. Since last time I have been sitting on a lecture room, my laptop has grown few extra inches bigger. I don’t think that I would use my laptop much during lectres, and its battery doesn’t even last as long as did my Powerbook’s. But what to do I need to check something from the Internet, waiting for an important email or just getting through boring lectures? Well that’s why I boughted Nokia N800 Internet Tablet.
I have been playing with this for a while and this is just better than I expected.

Laptop and serial

Missing serial sticker was luckily just a service mistake, they forgot to transfer sticker from old case to a new one so it was easily fixed. But no-one seems to know if it is possible to program serial number back to motherboard in Finland. Well, service is resolving that and I hope that I hear next week if it is possible.

Laptop back

I got my laptop back today. It was actually sooner than I thought, so nice work everyone :) So, after all my laptop got a new bottom case and a new motherboard. And all these repairs caused one interesting side effect, my laptop seems to be missing a serial number. There was a sticker earlier on bottom case - not anymore. OS X told me in the about dialog computer’s serial number - not anymore. I don’t know if this is what should happen when motherboard gets changed but I still don’t like it. There is nothing now on my laptop that identifies it and links it to me. Earlier there was serial number that is registered with me so in case someone steals this, it can be tracked down. But not anymore. Well, I just have to contact Apple again and try to get my serial numbers back to my computer.

No laptop

This is a weird weekend to me. It has been quite a long time since last time when I did not had laptop. It has been a while ago when I first ntoiced that its case was a little broken. A battery did not fit anymore nicely to case and case was pulling out above the CD-ROM drive which was sometimes causing that CDs did not came out from drive. And finally it still wobbles on a table which was also quite irretating.

So I finally called to Apple on Monday and ordered service to it. Service was good, I just went to local stoe to show my laptop and then they ordered needes parts and they called me on Thursday that I can bring my laptop to service. And it all went just fine, I was waiting on Friday a call that tells me that my laptop is ready to pick up but no… They did call me on Friday but just to inform me that my laptop’s motherboard also had something wrong and it will be replaced also. Unfortunately it takes couple businessday to ship a new motherboard from Holland so no laptop on this weekend.

So, now I have to try to remember what I did before I had my laptop… Luckily I still have my desktop PC :)
