Private Server

September 27th, 2007

Yesterday my website got a little upgrade, I was after a long wait transferred to Dreamhost PS, which is a dedicated virtual server just for me.
My site has not been under heavy traffic but still my gallery has been feeling slow sometimes. Not anymore, at least it seems to be faster.
Of course as downside I have to pay a little more for this server now, but at this time I really think that it is worth.
One of the nicest thing in Dreamhost PS is ability to change allocated resources in real-time. If I think or see that I need more memory to my server, I just login to panel and assign more and after a while it has been updated to my server. For example I tried to install and run GlassFish application server and it needed a lot more memory than I was originally allocated (and paying for). But with Dreamhost this was no problem, I just increased memory in control panel, waited for change to become active and then installed GlassFish and tested it. After testing I just went back to original memory setting and I only paid for few hours for more resources. This is exactly how things should work. Just pay for what you are using, not about what you might sometimes need to use.

How long did you have to wait for them to move you to a private server? I’ve been on hold for over a month, even though they continue to claim it’s just a 7 to 10 day wait.

I pre-ordered PS almost immediately after Dreamhost announced it. It was in early of August, so my waiting time was about two month.
