Apartment
Back in Finland when I needed to apply for room in International House, I decided to take a risk and choose cheap double room for my living, mostly because I wanted try to save as much money as possible (for anything else than just paying rent of course). So the room I got was in International House 1, first floor. And I think that after a month it is quite a time to post some comments about living here…
As this room is in the first floor, the view is not so great. All I can see is the driveway to the parking hall and a little bit of the street in front of our house. That’s all. No nice view to the mountains or anything, nothing at all. And we even have bars in front of window - which is of course nice thing as then no one can climb in from the window and rob everything we have here. All this together, it really doesn’t matter if we have curtains in front of window or not, usually we have curtains closed as there’s nothing to see anyways.
Then the interesting part, building quality. Have to say that coming from Finland, I am far from impressed how this building and room has been built. Our room has plastic floor and the way they have put it in the place is more than bad. There is bubbles, and not small ones but couple bigger ones and as floor is made from couple pieces, of course there’s a hole between the pieces. The wall and ceiling has wallpaper, which stays on somehow which I haven’t yet figured out. As in Finland we use paste to stick wallpaper on the wall and ceiling, which means that it is completely in contact to wall and ceiling then. Here, everywhere where I try I can push wallpaper couple millimeters toward to wall, some places even more. But so far it seems to stay there well enough so maybe it doesn’t matter how it is actually sticked in the wall…
Otherwise this room is nice enough, and quite big. Although our toilet is kinda huge, I would like to have a little bit smaller toilet and a little bit more space to room part, as now, my part of room has not enough space for closet doors to open well until they hit the desk, which cannot be moved further away as then it hits bed which is already as close to the wall as possible. But I can access my closet, so no problems.
As from the picture shows, we have AC in the room, which is really nice when it is hot. And we can open windows, which brings a little bit fresh air here, sometimes. And what comes to warming room in the colder weathers, one really nice surprise was to notice that rooms here has floor heating. It is really nice feeling when floor is warm and I don’t need to worry about my cold feet anymore. No more extra socks to keep feet warm. But how good this room is to keep warm in the winter, no idea yet, I am little bit afraid of that as windows doesn’t look so great, couple times when it has been raining really hard, it has actually rained inside a little bit, even though window has been closed. And I can hear so clearly all noises from the street, so I am really not so sure about how great they are keeping cold air outside and warm nice air inside. I guess that I need to get some extra blankets at some point…
